When ragweed pollen gets into the noses of people allergic to ragweed, antibodies attach to ragweed to cause itching and sneezing. Why don't these antibodies also attach to proteins from the foods that we eat and cause an allergic reaction? In 1939, Dr. Lawrence of Rockafeller University in New York fed poison ivy leaves to people who were allergic to poison ivy and showed that subsequently they could touch the plant without breaking out in blisters. Feeding a person poison ivy stopped a person's immunity from attacking the poison ivy.
