שלום רב, הנה: The term collagen refers to a complex family of genetically distinct proteins. Thirteen types of colla- gen (designated I-XIII) have been described and characterized to varying degrees (for review see Burgeson, 1988). Collagen molecules consist of three helical polypeptides, known as a chains, which are interwoven into a triple helix. The molecules sponta- neously self-assemble to fibrillar structures in a char- acteristic quarter-stagger arrangement. Covalent cross-linking, based on aldehyde formation from lysine or hydroxylysine side chains, begins in the extracellular space, almost immediately after fibrillo- genesis, between adjacent molecules packed into fibrillar arrays. By stabilizing molecular arrangement within collagen fibrils, intermolecular cross-links con- fer their stability and their physical and mechanical properties to connective tissues. They are essential to give fibrils the necessary tensile strength to perform their structural role. בברכה, דר׳ דדשב
