The Somatosensory system .
דיון מתוך פורום נוירוכירורגיה
Dear Dr. Ron Dobi For some reason i can't write in Hebrew so I"ll try it out in English . I had severe concussion about a year ago , since then i had heavy dizziness , tinnitus , TMJ Dysfunction , and my legs are num plus a buzzing feeling . I was sent to various tests among them The ENG Test were found Spontanus & positional nystagnus as well as strong equal caloric responce from both sides . I was also conducted a Computerized test of balance ( i think i called Postography test ) The test was shown a decreased input from The Somatosensory to 50% and almost No responce from the vestibular & vision system when it comes to balance issue . The ENT beleives it might be a brain damage or cerebelum damage and address me to Neurologiest The Neurologiest didn't understood these tests and sent me back to ENT ..... I would like to ask about the Somatosensory functions , If this dysfunction relate to my legs numbeness or it for other reason -( The Nerve mobility test was Normal also C.T Scan were Normal ) . Is their Another test available in order to evaluate the Somasosensory system ?? Are you recomending to conduct any additonal test to locate the main dysfunction ?? Thanks again for your kind attention , Sorry for the English . Shana Tova Arnold .
Dear arnold The somatosensory system refers to all the nerves which conduct the sensory stimulus. Thus, starting at the most distal sites such as the skin and going all the way up through the spinal cord to the brain. The somatosensory test, also called sensory evoked potential tests evaluate these pathways. However, there is a test called EMG (or NCT-nerve conduction test), which studies the conduction along the peripheral nerves. In your case because of the numbness it might be good to do this test too. It is possible that these tests may be abnormal despite a normal CT test. I suggest that you further discuss these issues with your neurologist, who knows you better and may suggest the suitable tests in your case. All the best Dr. Ron Dabby
