Viagra Contraindications Published by Pfizer VIAGRA (sildenafil citrate) is contraindicated in patients who are taking organic nitrates in any form at any time. Consistent with its known effects on the nitric oxide/cGMP pathway, VIAGRA was shown to potentiate the hypotensive effect of nitrates, AND its administration to patients who are concurrently using organic nitrates in any form is therefore contraindicated. Substances such as amyl nitrite (poppers), which are sometimes abused, should never be combined with VIAGRA. VIAGRA is not contraindicated with nitrates found in foods.
