Hello We have 2 children , the girl is 7 years old without any medical problem AND a son 3 years old AND has a cleft palate(soft AND hard) non genetic AND with no other medical OR genetics problem. we the parents don't have any genetics problem. We are planning new pregnancy AND we have some questions: 1.What are the chances that this will happen again AND does it meter if there will be a boy OR girl? 2.What can we do in order to reduce the chance of the cleft palate to appear again OR other problem? Thank You
Dear Michal, I apologize for the delay, I did find your question. As a rule I would recommend you a consultation with a geneticist, because your question is in his professional field AND not our. Generally, the chances of having again a child with cleft palate after the first non-genetic AND non-syndromic cleft palate in a healthy family is about 2 percent. In your case since you have already 3 children the probability is already higher for the next child. The incidence of cleft palate alone is more common in girls than in boys. In order to reduce the probability of having a child with cleft palate you need a comprehensive US survey AND laboratory examinations that the geneticist will suggest to you. However, cleft lip is relatively easier to detect AND isolated cleft palate is more difficult if at all. The craniofacial anatomy AND A child with isolated cleft palate if you receive a professional aid there is no significant feeding problem. Later if the closure of the palate is not sufficient AND the child suffer from nasal speech, I promise you that I will correct the velopharyngeal function AND combining with speech therapy he will get a normal speech. I wish you happy new year AND I will be on your disposition whenever you need. Good luck Professor Yehuda Finkelstein, MD, MA
