Benefits of Resveratrol IT sounds unbelievable: A substance that may help reverse some of the complications of obesity AND maybe even extend life. This was what David Sinclair, associate professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School, found in a study appearing in the online version of the journal Nature. The compound is called resveratrol (res-VAIR-uh-trawl). It's found naturally in red wine in small amounts. Of all plants, including grapes, the richest source of resveratrol is the medicinal plant, Polygonum cuspidatum, grown mostly in China AND Japan. Sinclair AND his colleagues fed mice a high-calorie diet, with 60 per cent of calories coming from fat. They also gave them resveratrol, which not only cut the death rate by 31 per cent, but also reduced obesity-related complications associated with diabetes, heart disease AND cancer. The test mice not only did better than a comparison group on the high-calorie diet minus resveratrol but they did almost as well as a third group of mice on a standard, lower-cal diet. The following is an excerpt from Sinclair's Interview with Newsweek's Anne Underwood: Underwood: In this new Nature study, you actually found physiological changes in the mice receiving resveratrol. What type of changes are we talking about? Sinclair: These are the sort of changes you see when you put an animal on a reduced-calorie diet OR increased exercise. We saw higher levels of mitochondria, the little powerhouses in each of our cells. As we get older, we start to lose them. That may be the reason we feel lethargic. You also lose them if you have diabetes OR Alzheimer's disease. By boosting levels of mitochondria, you can prevent AND possibly treat many diseases of ageing. We also saw changes associated with long life - lower blood sugar, lower insulin, lower body temperature. U: You saw genetic changes as well? S: At the genetic level, we saw alterations in all the known longevity pathways that we looked at. It would appear this molecule triggers our natural genetic defences against ageing. That's probably why resveratrol is such a potent molecule. It's no mere antioxidant. U: How is resveratrol accomplishing all these changes? S: It activates the Sir2 family of genes that are important for controlling lifespan AND response to diet. When you put a mouse on a calorie-restricted diet, these genes are activated, AND the mice live longer. I believe, AND others believe, that these genes are responsible for the health benefits of dieting AND even exercise. U: How did you zero in on resveratrol? S: It wasn't by randomly picking a molecule off the shelf AND testing it on lifespan. We were looking for a molecule that could activate Sir2. We screened over 20,000 compounds. The best one we had was resveratrol. Three years ago in Nature, we published a study showing it extended lifespan in yeast. There was a huge amount of skepticism that it would work higher up the food chain. But we've now shown the same benefits in nematode worms AND fruit flies. Earlier this year, an Italian group showed fish live 59 per cent longer AND are healthier when treated with resveratrol. Our new study in Nature is the first to address the question of whether it works in a mammal. So far the results are encouraging. OTHER BENEFICIAL PROPERTIES: It is claimed that resveratrol helps fight heart disease through strong antioxidant activity, by increasing nitric oxide to relax blood vessels AND by reducing abnormal blood clotting AND blockages. Initial research indicates that resveratrol may be effective against the development of amyloid deposits associated with Alzheimer's disease AND has shown it can inhibit both the development AND growth of cancer cells. Resveratrol is often particularly effective in helping to maintain normal oestrogen activity. As a phytoestrogen it can help control hot flushes, mood fluctuations, bone loss AND other menopausal symptoms. It appears to also be useful in blocking the onset AND progression of oestrogen-related cancers such as breast AND prostate cancers. It has also been shown to block the ability of cancer cells to metastasize to bone, particularly in pancreas, kidney AND breast cancers. Resveratrol can now be found in capsule form. The best part is that there are no side effects. - Article by Pahang Pharmacy Story from REDORBIT NEWS Published: 2007/01/28 21:00:00 CST
