Study says Google offers good diagnoses BRISBANE, Australia, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Doctors could bookmark Google.com as part of their diagnosis research because the Internet search engine is accurate, Australian researchers said. But patient advocacy groups said they would be concerned if physicians relied on Web sites in their diagnosis, the London Daily Mail reported. For the study, researchers at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, identified 26 difficult cases from the New England Journal of Medicine, the Daily Mail said. They compared the three top returns to the correct diagnoses listed in the Journal. The study said Google found the correct diagnosis in 15 of the 26 cases, the Daily Mail said. Researchers said Web-based search engines such as Google.com "are becoming the latest tools in clinical medicine," AND doctors need to be trained to use them effectively, the Daily Mail said. A spokeswoman for the Patients Association said doctors already had a wide knowledge concerning diagnosing conditions, asking what would happen "if they gave the patient the wrong information," the Daily Mail said. Mayur Lakhani, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners in London, said the Internet "is in no way a replacement for doctors," the Daily Mail reported.
