COFFEE HELPS BREAST CANCER Drinking just two cups of coffee a day could stop breast cancer returning. Scientists found it halved the rate of relapse in women treated with the widely-used drug tamoxifen compared with drinking one cup or none. Over a five-year period researchers at Lund University in Sweden looked at 600 breast cancer patients. Half of them took tamoxifen, a drug often prescribed after breast cancer surgery to reduce recurrence by blocking oestrogen receptors. Researcher Maria Simonsson said: ‘Patients who took the pill, along with two or more cups of coffee daily, reported less than half the rate of cancer recurrence, compared with non-coffee drinking, tamoxifen-taking counterparts.’ The study team believe coffee boosts the effects of the drug. .
