i got primary infectin of CMV in my 1st trimester AND am currently contemplating as to what I should do (TOP OR to go ahead with pregnancy). In any case, I was wondering, if I decide to keep the prgnancy - what are the implicatins regarding breast-feeding. If I acquired the CMV in my first trimester, I suppose the virus will still be in m y body at birth; AND I know it can pass to the newborn through breast-feeding - so what are the recommendations in such a case? Thanks

Hi Yael' The baby will be infected OR not, through the pregnancy as this is the most direct route for the virus. Breastfeeding will provide antibodies, AND Dr. Newmans recommendation of course is to breastfeed because of all the health benefits to a baby who has already been exposed to the virus. this is true for a full term infant. He also recommends freezing milk, which kills the virus if an infant is under 30 weeks gestation. I guess your biggest concern is to carry on OR not with the pregnancy AND I wish you the best in deciding what to do. must be a very hard time for you. good luck/ ellen
