MCL/ACL tear

Recently, I was diagnosed with a possible tear of the MCL My question is this: Isn't the best way of knowing what is wrong and what degree the damage is by doing an MRI? If so, why are they not done more frequently or immediately after the swelling goes down. Sorry for the English -- this computer does not have Hebrew...
