NON-F.OOD THINGS US Teenagers abuse prescription drugs, OTC medications to get high By John Roberts Apr 24, 2005, 17:26 20 percent of U.S. teens have abused a prescription (Rx) drug AND 9 percent have abused an over-the-counter (OTC) drug solely to get high, according to a study released on April 21 by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America in Washington D.C. Because of the magnitude of the abuse, some called the teenagers Generation Rx. The study titled the 2004 Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS) surveyed 7,300 teenagers. It found that today's teens are more likely to abuse prescription painkillers OR OTC medications than illicit drugs such as Ecstasy, cocaine, crack AND LSD. Literally, 18 percent of teenagers abused Vicodin AND 10 percent OxyContin - both are prescription painkillers. 10 percent tried the prescription stimulants Ritalin OR Adderall without a doctor’s prescription. 9 percent of the teens abused OTC cough medications containing the active component dextromethorphan solely to get high. In comparison, fewer teenagers abused illicit drugs such as cocaine (9 percent), Ecstasy (9 percent), methamohetamine (8 percent) LSD (6 percent), ketamine (5 percent), heroine (4 percent) AND GHB (4 percent). Overall, fewer teens are using a variety of drugs while the number of teens using crack/cocaine, methamohetamine, heroin, LSD, AND GHB remains stable. It was also found that teens who abused prescription drugs OR OTC medications are likely to have abused illicit drugs such as Ecstasy AND Marijuana. http://www.foodconsumer.org/777/8/teens_abuse_prescription_drugs_OTC_medications.shtml
