מצטערת על האנגלית Abnormal Intestinal Permeability Seen in Some Spouses of Crohn's Disease Patients -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) Nov 12 - An increased intestinal permeability reported in Crohn's disease patients and in some of their healthy relatives is also found in spouses of Crohn's disease patients, according to a recent report. This suggests that environmental rather than genetic factors are responsible for this abnormality. Dr. Lloyd Sutherland and colleagues from the University of Calgary in Canada assessed the intestinal permeability of 60 healthy subjects who were married to and living with a Crohn's disease patient for at least 3 months. Twenty-six healthy subjects with a similar demographic profile served as the control group. Increased intestinal permeability was noted in eight spouses. None of the subjects in the control group demonstrated this finding, the investigators report in the October issue of the American Journal of Gastroenterology. Age, gender, duration of cohabitation, alcohol use, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, and Crohn's disease activity in the patient had no bearing on the presence of increased permeability in spouses. The researchers found that spouses living with the Crohn's disease patient at the time of diagnosis were slightly more likely than others to demonstrate increased permeability, but the finding was not statistically significant. The current findings indicate that abnormal intestinal permeability is due to environmental factors. "We were unable to identify factors significantly associated with an abnormal permeability test in spouses," the investigators note. "However, the relationship with cohabitation at the time of disease diagnosis merits evaluation in a larger study."
