alpha-fetoprotein test results

Thank you for all of your help so far. I'm 37.5 years old AND 15 weeks AND 4 days. my AFP was positive at 1:167. I don't know if the numbers are the same as in Israel. The doctor here in the state really confused me. Once he said that I have a high risk for down syndrom AND second that the levels are ok for my age. Please adivse what is your opinion at the numbers AND is there any risk involve. It seems like the doctor is pushing me to have an amnio test

There is no positive OR negative in this test. It is a statisticasl test, not diagnostic. The risk for down syndrome is as you wrote above. It up to you if you decide to take the risk of amniocentesis, of about one in 200 till five hundred, for abortion, OR take the risk of one in 167 to have a baby with down syndrone. Your numbers mean that you have more than ninty nine percent for a baby without! down syndrome.
