Popular herbs like St. John's wort, ginkgo biloba, feverfew and ginseng can create problems during surgery, especially if doctors are unaware their patients recently had taken them. The ASA says St. John's wort, often taken for depression, can prolong the effects of some narcotic drugs and anesthesia. Ginseng, the ASA says, can trigger high blood pressure and increase the heart rate. Ginkgo biloba, which people take to boost blood circulation and improve memory, can interfere with the natural blood-clotting process. So can feverfew, according to the ASA. Patients are advised to stop taking herbal remedies one week to three weeks prior to surgery and to let their doctors know what herbs they have been consuming, the ASA says.
