Osteosarcoma -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Definition Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer in children. It occurs most often in the bones on either side of the knee and in the upper arm. Incidence Influencing factors Four in 1 million children are diagnosed with osteosarcoma each year. Osteosarcoma is somewhat more likely to strike males than females. It typically occurs during adolescent years. The cause of osteosarcoma is unknown; however, genetic influences and irradiation has been implicated in its development. Treatment strategies Removal of the affected bone and surrounding tissue, either by amputation or limb salvage procedure, remains the treatment of choice. Use of chemotherapy in conjunction with surgery is necessary to prevent recurrence or spread of the tumor in children with localized disease and to control distant metastasis in those with metastatic disease. Survival rates Survival rates for children with localized osteosarcoma are at about 70 percent, compared with 15 percent in the early 1960s. Survival rates for children with metastatic disease are about 30 percent. Current research Research involves the use of multiple drugs that are given to decrease the tumor size making surgical procedures more feasible, and to prevent tumor recurrence or spread and improve outcome especially for children with metastatic disease. מתוך האתר http://www.stjude.org/medical/osteosarcoma.htm
