High blood pressure
דיון מתוך פורום רפואת משפחה
my husbend (35) suffers from high blood pressure and high colesterole. The problem seems to run in his family, he has done all kind of checks and he is otherwise healthy. He takes Bendrofluzide (sorry I have the brend name only at the moment) in the last few months and his blood pressure is normal now. He is out of his medication for 2 days and his blood pressure is still normal, does it mean that he is still under the influence of the medication? can he stop for few more days see maybe he doesn't need it anymore?? He left his stressful job, and I think he should be better now, thank you Mor
oops, prblem with english here!!!! hope you can read, it's mixed lines...

any stopping of medications should be done under the supervision of the primary care physician. I'm not familiar with Bendrofluazine, but from the search I've done its a Thiazide diuretic, which is a reasonable treatment for hypertension. I don't know the medication's "half life" which can tell me how long does the medication stays in the circulation once taken. If its a long-acting drug, its influence can be seen 2-3 days and even more after discontinuation. That's why his blood pressure should be monitored daily, and I'd suggest a slow "weaning" from the medication in contrast to abrupt stop of it. He can change to every other day regimen for 2-3 weeks, then to thrice weekly and to twice weekly. If still his blood pressure stays withing norm (lower than 140/90 at most times) it might be stopped entirely, but still measuring the blood pressure daily for another month or so to see its not rising back.
